Pre-Application Interest Form

The City University of New York is pleased to offer several high impact internship opportunities based in public service learning. The programs below, listed with their projected program cycle timeline, are coordinated by the CUNY Edward T. Rogowsky Internship Program in Government and Public Affairs:

  • Spring - Caucus CUNY Scholars Internship Program (Early December Deadline)
  • Fall - Women’s Public Service Internship Program (Early July Deadline)
  • Spring/Fall - NYC Internship Program in Government and Public Affairs (At least 2 weeks prior to semester or prior to registration)

Each program will provide qualified students the opportunity to learn with the offices of selected legislators. Each program has specific eligibility requirements and expectations. CUNY students who are interested in participating should first review the descriptions of the programs on the Edward T. Rogowsky Internship website: https://etrinternship.cuny.edu/sites/ 

If you would like to participate without earning credit (only applicable to the Caucus CUNY Scholars Internship Program or Women’s Public Service Internship Program) you can apply directly using the application links on our website. 

If you would like to earn credit alongside any of the above internships, the next step is to complete this Interest Form to connect with your Campus Faculty Coordinator for a conversation about your eligibility and registering for the internship seminar on campus. The Campus Faculty Coordinator (CFC) will review your transcript, provide the specifics of the on-campus course, and provide recommendations for which internship experience is best for you at this time.

The New York City Internship Program in Government and Public Affairs will provide CUNY students an opportunity to build on their career skills through public service in the New York City-based district offices of New York legislators.  Students are placed throughout the five boroughs, in governmental and non-governmental agencies and organizations. Students are able to network, gain office experience and begin understand the culture of public service professionals.

In addition to the first hand experiences they receive with the local offices of legislators, interns are given academic guidance through enrollment in campus-based seminars with faculty, as well as in special events and/or meetings with internship program staff. 

This combination of on-campus and off-campus activities constitutes the core of the program—an academically rigorous experience for students exploring careers and involvement in public service.

Program information:

  • Students serve 10-12 hours per week (varies by campus)
  • Students will enroll in a weekly seminar at their college to earn academic credit 
  • Students also attend 3 public affairs panel discussions coordinated in collaboration with CUNY TV

Eligibility:

  • Participating students should carry a 2.5 GPA (minimum requirements vary by campus)
  • Any major may apply, but students who wish to be considered should demonstrate an interest in public service
  • Applicants must have completed at least 24 undergraduate credits by the term of participation (CUNY graduate students are not subject to the credit requirement)
  • Students will enroll in a weekly seminar at their college to earn academic credit

Application Procedures:

The CUNY Women’s Public Service Internship Program will provide CUNY students an opportunity to build on their career skills through public service in the New York City-based district offices of women elected officials. The focus of internship assignments vary but generally promote women’s issues in New York.  Community affairs, research, and policy formulation in areas of most concern to women is central. 

Women’s Public Service Interns also attend the CUNY Women’s Leadership Conference and other special events sponsored by the University. This combination of on-campus and off-campus activities constitutes the core of the CUNY Women’s Public Service Internship Program—an academically rigorous experience for students exploring careers and involvement in public service.

The Program is coordinated by the Edward T. Rogowsky Internship Program in Government & Public Affairs and designated officers at each CUNY college.

Program information:

  • Students serve in the district offices of legislators working on Women's Issues at municipal, state, and federal levels throughout New York City
  • CUNY Women’s Public Service Interns participate in special meetings and activities with Internship Program staff. 
  • Students seeking credit can enroll in campus-based seminars with faculty. 
  • Interns serve 15 hours per week
  • Scholarship-eligible students will receive $2,000.00
  • Students also attend 3 public affairs panel discussions coordinated in collaboration with CUNY TV
  • Participation in the annual CUNY Women’s Leadership Conference

Eligibility:

  • Must carry a 3.0 GPA,
  • Any major may apply, but students who wish to be considered should demonstrate an interest in women’s issues and public policy in New York.
  • Applicants must have completed at least 30 undergraduate credits by the fall term (CUNY graduate students are not subject to the credit requirement)
  • Students have the option to enroll in a weekly seminar at their college to earn academic credit

  3. Complete the program application. The application includes an application form with personal essay section, professional resume, most recent student transcript and 2 faculty recommendations.
  4. All materials including recommendations should be submitted by the deadline.


The Caucus CUNY Scholars Internship Program will provide CUNY students an opportunity to build on their career skills through public service in the New York City-based district offices of New York State Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic & Asian Legislative Caucus (Caucus) members. The focus of internship assignments vary but generally focus on the services provided by the Caucus to their constituencies in the City of New York.  Community affairs, research, and policy formulation in areas of most concern to the Caucus is central. 

Caucus CUNY Scholars also attend the Annual Legislative Conference of the New York State Association of Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic & Asian Legislators Inc. and other special events sponsored by the University. This combination of on-campus and off-campus activities constitutes the core of the Caucus CUNY Scholars Program—an academically rigorous experience for students exploring careers and involvement in public service.

The Program is coordinated by the Edward T. Rogowsky Internship Program in Government & Public Affairs and designated officers at each CUNY college.

Program information:

  • Students serve in the district offices of legislators who comprise the Caucus throughout New York City
  • Caucus Scholars participate in special meetings and activities with Internship Program staff. 
  • Students seeking credit can enroll in campus-based seminars with faculty. 
  • Interns serve 15 hours per week
  • Scholarship-eligible students will receive $2,000.00
  • Students also attend 3 public affairs panel discussions coordinated in collaboration with CUNY TV
  • Participation in the annual Caucus Legislative Conference in Albany

Eligibility:

  • Must carry a 3.0 GPA,
  • Any major may apply, but students who wish to be considered should demonstrate an interest in the work of the Caucus in New York.
  • Applicants must have completed at least 30 undergraduate credits by the spring term (CUNY graduate students are not subject to the credit requirement)
  • Students have the option to enroll in a weekly seminar at their college to earn academic credit

Application Procedures:

FERPA RELEASE

To help assess your level of preparation for an internship in government and public affairs your CFC will evaluate your transcript in advance of your application to the program.  Please upload a student copy of your transcript below. If you prefer, you can provide your transcript and resume when you make contact with the CFC. Please complete the CFC section in any case--this will trigger a notification to your CFC you have submitted this form. Your CFC will receive your included information and begin your evaluation.

Students who wish to grant third parties, including parents, access to educational records maintained by the student’s college should use this form, which requires a date and signature. Electronic signatures are acceptable only if the College is able to identify and authenticate the student as the source of the release.

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) prohibits access to, or release of, educational records or personally identifiable information contained in such records without the written consent of the student. Students who are currently enrolled in any CUNY Institution are able to obtain an “Unofficial Transcript”, free of charge, through their Student Center in CUNYFirst by following the steps below:

  1. Select “Transcript and Verification” tile.
  2. Once “Transcript and Verification” is selected, select the CUNY Institution from which you are requesting an unofficial transcript that you have attended/enrolled in.
  3. Select “View Report”, and in the “Report Type” dropdown, select “Student Unofficial Transcript” and click Submit.
